History of the Doll

Barbie dolls by Mattel debuted in 1959 with the very popular Ponytail Barbie in a black and white striped swimsuit being the first dolls produced. In 1972 Mattel once again made Ponytail Barbies especially for Montgomery Ward, using the same face mold with a later issue body.

Description of the Doll

The 1972 Montgomery Ward Barbie is an 11.5 inch ponytail Barbie with short curly bangs, molded eyelashes, blue eyeshadow, blue eyes, and red lips. She has no earring holes and her toenails and fingernails may be unpainted or painted. She is wearing a black and white striped swimsuit and white high heels and has a paper wrist tag that says "Genuine Barbie ® by Mattel ®" on one side and "Made in Japan" on the other side. Her right buttock is marked "Midge ™ © 1962, Barbie ® © 1958, by Mattel Inc. Patented".
