The Horsman Doll Company was started in 1865 by Edward Imeson Horsman, making composition dolls. The Horsman Doll name was sold in the 1980's to a company in Hong Kong. The Ruthie doll face was first made by Horsman Dolls in the 1950's as part of their Magic Skin line (one piece vinyl dolls). By 1962 however, their doll making techniques had evolved to using blow mold technology and they were producing Ruthie dolls for the mass market.

The 1962 - 1966 Ruthie dolls are nicely detailed, all vinyl construction, with dimples on the knees and moveable arms and legs. Head markings include T14, T16, T21, T27, generally corresponding to the size of the doll, but they did put the same head marking on different sizes of dolls within a range. They have rooted hair and sleep eyes.
